What Counts as Kosher in the Cannabis Aisle

Cannabis is a plant, and plants are naturally kosher. Where it actually matters is in the ingredients added to edibles, gummies, drinks, and infused products. Here's the row-by-row cheat sheet, plus what to ask for at the counter.

  • Flower & Pre-Rolls

    Naturally kosher

Whole flower is just the plant. No added ingredients, no animal derivatives. Pre-rolls with paper wraps are fine. Skip the infused wraps if you want to keep it strict.

  • Edibles & Chocolates

    Check the symbol

The category that matters most. Look for OU, OK, Star-K, Kof-K, CRC, or another recognized hechsher right on the package. Several NY-licensed edible brands carry certification. We'll point you to them.

  • Gummies & Soft Chews

    Check the symbol

Gelatin is usually the gotcha. Pectin-based gummies are the safer bet. Certified brands print the hechsher on the package, no guessing.

  • THC Beverages

    Check the symbol

Seltzers and tonics are simple. Water, THC emulsion, flavors. Several beverages we stock carry kosher certification right on the can.

  • Vapes & Concentrates

    Naturally kosher

Distillate, live resin, rosin. All plant-derived, no animal product involved. Considered acceptable under most kosher standards. Check with your rabbi for the strictest tier.

  • Topicals & Tinctures

    Ask first

Glycerin and carrier oils can be plant or animal. Look for the cert mark, or ask us. Certified brands tell you exactly what's in the carrier.

Just Ask. We'll Find What's Certified.

Our Spring Valley budtenders are trained to walk you through which brands on the shelf carry kosher certification, and to show you the hechsher right on the packaging before you buy.

No quiz. No awkwardness. No upsell. Tell us "kosher-certified only" and we narrow the menu down to exactly that.

Try one of these at the counter

  • What edibles do you have with an OU, OK, or Star-K?
  • Which gummies are pectin, not gelatin?
  • What's certified and low-dose for a first-timer?
  • Do any of the THC seltzers carry a hechsher?
  • Show me everything with a kosher mark on the box.

Kosher Cannabis FAQ

Quick answers to what we hear most often from Spring Valley customers. Don't see yours? Call (845) 406-3004.

Is cannabis kosher?

Cannabis flower itself is a plant, and plants are naturally kosher. Where it gets nuanced is with edibles, gummies, chocolates, drinks, and anything infused, because that's where added ingredients (gelatin, flavorings, glycerin) can change the answer. Look for a kosher symbol on the package, or just ask us.

Do you stock OU, OK, Star-K, or Kof-K certified products?

Yes. Several brands on our Spring Valley shelf carry one of the recognized hechshers. Inventory rotates, so the move is to ask any budtender what's currently certified. We'll show you the symbol on the packaging.

Are your gummies kosher?

Some are, some aren't. It depends on the brand and whether they use gelatin (animal-derived) or pectin (plant-based). Pectin-based gummies from certified brands are usually the simplest path. Tell us at the counter and we'll point you there.

Is smoking flower considered kosher?

Cannabis flower is plant matter with no animal derivatives, so it's broadly considered acceptable. Different rabbinical authorities take different views on cannabis use itself. That's a conversation for your rabbi, not your budtender. What we can tell you is what's on the shelf.

Do you carry anything Passover-friendly (kosher for Pesach)?

Some certified edible brands publish a Passover-acceptable list each year. Selection changes seasonally. Call ahead or swing by closer to the holiday and we'll tell you exactly what's available that week.
